Although I
have loved scooters since my teens, and was supposed to buy a Jet
200 in 1986 (long, sad story) I'm afraid I may be seen as a bit of a
scourge of the scooter scene. One of those older, full time, money
in the bank types who decide they want to be a part of a scene, and
then just buy their way into it. Granted part of than is true. I am
older and I do work full time. Money in the bank and just buying my
way in, though, is another story. I had some money saved for a trip
to Scotland with my pipe band. The trip was cancelled due to lack of
funds, so I promptly spent my meager savings on a non-running P125x. Although not the scooter of my dreams I figure I've got to do my
scooter apprenticeship, like everybody else. You know, work my
way up; start in the mail room, not the board room; do my time in
the minors; lowest rung; earn my stripes; walk before I run; come up
from the ranks; pull myself out of the muck; start at point A; all
that sort of thing. As far as getting into a scene, I was hanging
out with many of these people at shows, without a scooter. Now
I get to ride with them as well. It was all kind of spur
of the moment, so I'm still in shock about doing it. I was coming home from work on the bus. We had just exited I-25 on
the 20th St. exit, and onto Central. I
casually glanced out my right side
window. I began to hyperventilate, and not a
paper bag in site. I pulled the stop cord without thinking.
My stop was still to come, but I had seen a vision that had to be
confirmed. I had seen Sportique
Scooters.
I
made
my way to the shop and just kind of made a fool
of myself. Incoherent
babbling, mouth agape, drooling, walking in a
daze, and such. I spoke to
the guys at the shop, further deepening myself in stupidity, but
got the point across that I was looking for a scooter. I was put on
the list, bought a few items (including a copy of Scoot
Quarterly), and stumbled out into the street. The very next day, my
excitement still keen, and armed with my SQ, I
began to poke around on the web. It was at the Scooter
Shop that I found my scooter. I called them that
day and put down half the price, made arrangements for the rest and
shipping and went into a floating state. I do not necessarily
recommend this approach, as I took a bath on the crating and
shipping, but if you see something you just cannot live without,
give it a go. I probably won't be doing it again. Now I know that many do not like the P series, and to be honest with
you I would much rather have a classic scooter. I have come up with
some conclusions/rationalizations about that, though. 1) Since this 'really' is my
first
scooter, I'm starting
out
with
something newer, thus more reliable (I hope);
2) I got it for a very
nice price; 3)This will NOT be my
last
scooter,
you can bet on that; and 4)Like Mike Dregni said, if you see a
scooter that grabs you, 'damn the torpedoes- full speed ahead!' And,
damn the torpedoes, I have. I kick myself for doing this almost
hourly, but somehow, and I know not how, the above scooter speaks to
me. I don't know, maybe I have malaria. So there
it is, my story. Please stay tuned for the continuing saga of this project
I will even try to include some snaps.
