REVIEW OF The Ska Parade: Running Naked Thru the Cornfield- Various Artists- A to Y Productions

The Ska Parade is perhaps the most widely known Ska radio show in the country.  That has enabled Albino Brown and Tazy Phillips, at the helm of Ska Parade, to put together a wide variety of sounds in the second Ska Parade compilation.  I cannot put my finger on it, but I have never gone in for compilations.  I've always had a collectors way of buying music, with an all or nothing view of music, that has excluded compilations as a sort of a cop-out.  Runnin' Naked Thru the Cornfield, however, is an exception I have made.  A very eclectic collection of songs, it is not for the un-initiated of the ska scene.  Although giving some of the scenes best acts free reign, it is not a primer in the sounds of ska.  For those who know the ins and outs of what they like in ska it is a must have, as it includes things that you will not find anywhere.  A few of the gems on this collection include two BoitoVision tracks with Hepcat's Greg Lee, and Jump With Joey's pianist Mike Boito-  Big Bamboo and Reincarnation; two Equators tracks- Softly Softly featuring Angelo Moore, and Ageof 5 featuring Dave Wakeling; Big 6's Groovey Geezer; and Jump With Joey's Fun at King King.  For us TwoTone types the CD offers Dave Wakeling and Bang! doing   Two Swords, and in an odd twist of fate The Specials doing Farmyard Connection originally recorded by Fun Boy Three.  For those of us who remember The Vengers, Uniform of Destruction by Reel Big Fish drags up painful memories when they sing of going to Seattle.  The varied collection is accompanied by a very complete, informative, but at times fragmented liner notes.  On the whole, though, I really enjoyed Runnin' Naked Thru the Cornfield.  It is available at shows or can be ordered through the Ska Parade website.
